SILENCE AS A PSYCHOLOGICAL SHIELD: A FREUDIAN PSYCHOANALYTIC STUDY OF THE SILENT PATIENT

Abstract

This study analyzes the multifaceted concept of silence in Alex Michaelides’ novel, The Silent Patient, through a Freudian psychoanalytic lens. It explores the underlying motives behind the protagonist Alicia Berenson’s choice to remain mute following the tragic murder of her husband, Gabriel. Rather than viewing her speechlessness merely as an absence of communication, the investigation reveals it to be a sophisticated psychological defense mechanism. This defense stems from severe unconscious conflicts, deeply repressed emotions, and early traumatic memories—specifically the emotional rejection and psychological abandonment experienced during her childhood at the hands of her father. The findings demonstrate that Alicia’s silence operates as a dual phenomenon: on one hand, it functions as a protective shield to safeguard her vulnerable psyche from overwhelming trauma and guilt; on the other hand, it serves as a form of non-verbal protest against vocal expression, rejecting language as an adequate tool for authentic self-expression. Ultimately, the cumulative impact of her childhood trauma shapes all her subsequent interpersonal relationships, eventually culminating in bottled-up hostility, defensive violence, and absolute muteness. By contextualizing her silence within psychoanalytic theory, this research highlights how repressed psychological wounds dictate emotional expression and behavioral outcomes in post-traumatic conditions.
