Poetic Linguistics: An Analysis of Anis Nagi's Semantic and Metaphorical System

This research article investigates the theoretical framework of "Poetic Linguistics" pioneered by Anis Nagi, specifically focusing on his unique semantic and metaphorical system as an objective tool for literary analysis. Moving beyond traditional impressionistic criticism, Nagi’s theory posits that for a poet, the word is not merely a communicative medium but an autonomous "realm of experience." The study explores the core components of Nagi’s linguistic model, including the transition from general linguistic perception to creative expression, where lexical meanings fade to give way to a complex series of emotional reactions. Central to this analysis is Nagi’s redefinition of the metaphor as a tool for semantic expansion—arguing that it is rooted not only in similarity but also in contrast and relational proximity. The article further examines the concept of "Mahakaati Isti’ara" (mimesis/imagery), which grants physical embodiment to abstract concepts, and the dual nature of context (syntactic and emotional). By applying these principles to contemporary Urdu long poems, the study demonstrates how poetic linguistics decodes communicative complexities and reveals the deep structure of the text. The findings conclude that Nagi’s semantic system provides a scientific methodology for understanding the modern poem as an organic linguistic unit, where every word draws its value from its specific placement within the creative context rather than its dictionary definition.
