Abstract

Hadith constitutes one of the fundamental sources of Islamic law and religious thought. Muslim scholarly traditions developed systematic methodologies for its transmission, preservation, authentication, and critical evaluation. Ahl al-Sunnah wa Jama‘ah and the Imami Twelver Shi‘ah both acknowledge the authority of Hadith, the necessity of transmission, the importance of isnad, and the investigation of narrators. Nevertheless, significant methodological differences appear in several core areas of Hadith transmission, including the authority of transmission, the criterion of narrator integrity, the probative value of solitary reports, the formation of Hadith corpora, the principles of al-jarh wa al-ta‘dil, and the role of corroborative indicators in accepting reports. In the Sunni tradition, the Companions are regarded as the primary transmitters of Prophetic Hadith, whereas in the Imami Twelver tradition, the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt hold a central position in the transmission and interpretation of the Prophetic Sunnah. This article presents a comparative and analytical study of these methodological distinctions. It does not aim to refute or prefer one tradition over the other; rather, it seeks to clarify the scholarly foundations, historical background, and methodological structures of both traditions in the field of Hadith transmission.
