Abstract

This study examines the rational (ʿaqlī) exegetical approach of Maulana Wahiduddin Khan as reflected in his renowned work Tazkir al-Qur’an. The research explores how the author employs intellectual reasoning, reflection on natural phenomena, and contemporary scientific awareness to interpret Qur’anic verses in a manner that resonates with the modern human mind. It analyzes the methodological foundations of his tafsir, particularly his emphasis on tadabbur (deep reflection), universality of the Qur’anic message, and its relevance to contemporary intellectual challenges. The study further evaluates how his approach differs from traditional narrative-based (naqlī) exegesis by prioritizing rational persuasion, internal coherence of the Qur’an, and experiential understanding over extensive reliance on classical reports. Through a qualitative analytical method, selected passages from Tazkir al-Qur’an are examined to highlight the distinctive features of his rational style, including simplicity of language, thematic coherence, and focus on spiritual awakening. The research concludes that Wahiduddin Khan’s rational approach presents a significant contribution to modern Qur’anic studies by bridging the gap between classical Islamic scholarship and contemporary intellectual discourse, making the Qur’an more accessible and meaningful for present-day readers.
